Trends to Watch from the Spring 2019 Shows in Paris
What Will Perform in Retail?
This season in Paris was all about the buzz! From Hedi Slimane's debut at Celine (which from many viewpoints, really dropped the ball in innovation despite being uber-marketable and ready for retail) to Balenciaga's energized runway show and the reviled showing from Thom Browne. There were other great debuts this season, such as Riccardo Tisci at Burberry, but their show was in London and we really want to focus on the Paris scene for now. I want to go over a few (five, to be exact) trends that I see doing very well in the Spring of 2019 once they start to hit the retail shelves!
Trend 1: Vibrant Colors

Who doesn't want to be loud in the spring time? You're starting to feel the summer weather coming in after the harsh snows and cold of winter and you just want to shout from the rooftops! Maybe don't do that...but here's a way to do it with your wardrobe. Bright colors like those shown by Balenciaga translate extremely well in photography and editorial. You'll certainly get a few head turns walking down the street in one of these numbers. Think about mixing it with other trends, such as the luxurious draping of the red Balenciaga dress in the first picture above. This dress is also an example of the "dramatic shoulder" trend which is the next one we'll take a look at.
Trend 2: Dramatic Shoulders

A dramatic shoulder just says power suit, doesn't it? It hearkens back to the days of shoulder pads in the 90s, but it was certainly executed better this time around. Celine and Louis Vuitton showed this trend like no other. If you want an updated power suit, look no further than the likes of Hedi Slimane and Nicholas Ghesquière. In the era of #MeToo, we want women to feel they have the ability to evoke that power and grab life like a boss. #believe
Trend 3: Tonal Neutrals
Alexander McQueen, Isabel Marant, Paco Rabanne, Dries Van Noten, Louis Vuitton (larger) |
This is the trend for me. It calls my name from the catwalks themselves. Mix and match it with a bright color (see Lois Vuitton), a bold print (see Dries Van Noten), or a glossy metallic (see Celine) and call it a day. That is the best quality of a neutral - it goes with everything! White, blush, cream, tan, beige, brown, black - all of these colors fit the bill of a tonal neutral. You can go monochromatic with it too, such as is shown by both Alexander McQueen and Paco Rabanne.
Trend 4: Bold Prints
Valentino, Balenciaga, Alexander McQueen, Dries Van Noten, Paco Rabanne (larger) |
I can always get behind a good print. A bright, vibrant or even "mismatched" (quotes because there's no such thing as mismatched, just the way you pull it off...or don't) print always gets my attention. The looks from Mr. Valentino himself (well, Mr. Valentino Clemente Ludovico Garavani as his friends like to call him) were divine. If you like bright, bold print, this is one collection you cannot miss. Bold is the name of the game this season and designers went there.
Trend 5: Glossy Metallics
Paco Rabanne, Celine, Isabel Marant, Louis Vuitton, Isabel Marant (larger) |
Unlike the tonal neutral, metallics are my favorite trend that I just cannot pull off. From glitz and glamor with Isabel Marant to just strutting your stuff on the way to work with Celine, designers pumped up the metallic quotient this season. Menswear metallic was all the rage with a cool, casual factor that lets men wear this trend without being as in your face about it. Thank you, Ms. Marant and Mr. Slimane, for making our dreams come true too!
