My introduction to the show!
On December 19th, 2018, Jennifer Michelle came to our fashion lab class to discuss her career history and journey as well as provide the class with an opportunity to work with her for a fashion show. The show would be the night of January 22nd - and an awesome opportunity. Everyone in the class was very excited to be able to work on something like this - and for a grade! At this time, all we really knew about it was that it would include designers and stylists from the local Charlotte area and that it was part of the Charlotte Networking Week event, which included a number of other networking meetings, meals, and other events.
The jobs described would be the opportunity to walk as a model for one of the designers, be a stylist to help put together each designer's looks for the runway show, be a designer assistant for the evening to help them with whatever they would need, be Jennifer's assistant for the evening, work as front of house (FOH), back of house (BOH), and even things such as photographer, press, visual design, etc. I was hopeful to be a designer's assistant or Jennifer's assistant, as my strengths truly play into that role. I would have enjoyed styling as well, but was not sure that I would have the design know-how or technical skills to get through that piece.
Once we all signed up for positions we would like, Professor Davis emailed all of the students volunteering, as well as Jennifer Michelle. Guess what position I was SO excited to receive? I would work as Jennifer Michelle's assistant for the show. I did not know entirely what this would involve, or any pre-work that would happen either. I was excited to have the potential for such a visible position and to really help out with the behind-the-scenes at the show itself.
That next week, I started receiving emails from Jennifer regarding show preparation. We emailed back and forth about scheduling fittings, setting up class meetings, and other things that were happening including runway rehearsals and such. I made sure all contacts that needed to be involved were kept in the loop. My assignments will be described in later posts!
