Sloane Legrand Class Visit
One of the first tasks that I received from Jennifer
Michelle was to schedule a time for Jen from Sloane Legrand to visit our lab
class to speak about her experiences and the some about the show. Sloane Legrand
was a boutique in Charlotte, but Jen has since scaled that to a personal
styling/selling business where she meets clients face-to-face as this was much
more viable for her in terms of profitability.
At first, we discussed over email what dates would work for both the class meeting and the model fitting. I came to realize neither Jen nor I really knew what was expected of her in regard to speaking in front of class to her contribution to the show. On my way to the Nashona fitting, I gave her a call as she was to visit class the following Tuesday, the 8th. We talked a bit about her experiences, my own, and what we wanted to do for her presentation. Jen wanted to keep it casual and make sure everyone was involved. She also disclosed to me that she had no clue about the fashion show until I contacted her via email in the first place.
Prior to this, I also made sure the 8th would work
for class time. On the day of the visits, I ensured to have parking passes for
Jen and Jennifer Michelle as she planned to attend the visit to record, thanks
to Professor Davis as the contact person at the JWU office was very brusk in response
to my request. I met Jen at the garage and walked her over to the building,
where she was introduced to the class and started speaking of her experiences. She
had a very interesting story as there was no straight-line path over the course
of her career – from sales at Louis Vuitton to heading an education department
for nurses – she is proof that you should not keep yourself in a bubble as its
best to explore many different interests to find what works for you. While Jen
is currently a nurse recruiter, she still keeps busy with the personal selling
and styling aspect of fashion that she enjoys.
Jennifer Michelle also came briefly to class to record Jen speaking to us and take pictures. She wore a fabulous Flow by Tara Davis top too! Jennifer Grace stayed after speaking to us to answer questions and talk one-on-one/in a group. She gave us advice on career goals, what to focus on, and how to get there from where we were. Jen even offered a few students reference information, such as contacts at Burberry in South Park mall. She told me that “something is telling me to tell you to go to New York. You have to.” You never know!
We confirmed our fitting time for Thursday, January 17th at 5:30pm to ensure Jen would receive enough items to fit within the show constraints and for model sizes. And that was a wrap!
